Boston Vacation – July 3, 2018

King’s Chapel

Today was our first full day in Boston. For summer vacations, I usually head south, where it’s much warmer. So, I was a little apprehensive going north. My thought was that it was going to be a bit cooler than the summer weather I like, however, Boston is experiencing unusually hot weather this summer, with temps into the 90s! I’m loving it, but Stacy, and the Bostonians are melting into the sidewalks!

We drove into town without too much trouble. I found an app (Best Parking) that let me find the closest spot to our destination at the best price, so I was able to reserve a spot the night before, and know exactly where we were going to park! We walked uptown, through the Boston Commons, and to the original Cheers! This is the location for the external shots of Cheers, however, the bar itself looks very different. It’s actually called the “Bull & Finch Pub.” There is a “model bar” of the Cheers set on the second floor. It’s a small replication of the Cheers set.

After lunch, we walked back through the Boston Commons and onto the Freedom Trail. This trail takes you through many important locations of American History. The most impressive for me was the Old South Meeting House, where you can see where George Washington stood, to look over the damage the British soldiers had left in their wake.

Continuing on, after visiting Faneuil Hall, we stopped by the location of the second Cheers “model bar” location for a few drinks, and to rest up for our trek up to the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides!) After checking out the ship, dry dock, and museum, we decided to Uber back into town, so we would make it in time for our reservations for the “Ghosts & Gravestones Trolley Tour.” The trolley took us all over town, as our guide talked about the murders and horrors that took place at the various locations. We also stopped at Copp’s Burial Ground, and Granary Burial Ground to hear stories of our Founding Fathers (and others) who are buried there.

As we were finishing up our tour, the skies opened and cooling rain started to pour down on us. We ran to the subway, and took a train back to Boston Commons, so we only had a block to walk back to the car. On the way back to the hotel, we picked up some pizza from a local restaurant. Day one in Boston was amazing and exhausting. Can’t wait for day two!
